Marmaris as a Hub for Sustainable Art and Cultural Dialogue
"Valuable Scraps" Exhibition in Marmaris
Transforming Metal into Art: The "Valuable Scraps" Exhibition in Marmaris
Marmaris is renowned worldwide for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and vibrant tourism landscape. However, between October 20 and 26, 2026, this coastal town hosted a profound artistic transformation. Organized through the collaboration of Marmaris Municipality and the Istanbul Intercultural Art Dialogues Association (IKASD), the "Valuable Scraps: From Scrap to Art" exhibition turned Atatürk Square into an inspiring open-air gallery.
A Journey From Scrap to Masterpiece
Curated by Beste Gürsu, the exhibition centered on a thought-provoking question: "Can something once used and no longer serving its original function acquire new meaning through the touch of art?"
Eleven international artists answered this prompt with remarkable ingenuity, repurposing industrial waste, discarded cutlery, sheet metal, and forgotten machinery parts into captivating sculptures. The participating artists included Abinoro Akporode Collins, Dotun Popoola, Emmanuel Adeiza Adams, and Steve Ucheka Ekpenisi from Nigeria; Aleksei Medvedkov and Maksim Bulygin from Russia; Dario Tironi from Italy; Deval Verma from India; John Lopez from the USA; Mostafa Akbari from Iran; and Shoodrik (Cédric Surmin) from France.
Highlights from the Exhibition
Set against the scenic backdrop of the Mediterranean coastline and the statue of Atatürk, each artwork delivered a powerful message on sustainability, ecology, and artistic recycling:
- The Mechanical Flying Turtle: Crafted from intricate gears, mesh, and metallic components, a massive sea turtle appears to glide effortlesly through the air. The piece serves as a striking reminder of marine conservation and the impact of waste on ocean life.
- The Scrap Vessel: Constructed from reclaimed wooden panels and hundreds of metallic spoons, this boat sculpture features a sparkling wave rising from its deck, symbolizing the need to protect our seas.
- The Metal Bee: Adorned with delicate laser-cut forest patterns on its wings, this towering bee sculpture highlights biodiversity and the indispensable role of pollinators in our ecosystem.
- The Galloping Rust Horse: Assembled from weathered and rusted scrap metals, this dynamic dynamic sculpture proves that discarded materials still hold immense aesthetic power.
Marmaris as a Hub for Art and Cultural Dialogue
"Valuable Scraps" was far more than a visual spectacle; it provided a platform to reflect on consumer culture, resource scarcity, and global dialogue. By embedding public art directly into everyday life at Atatürk Square, the event enriched the cultural identity of Marmaris and offered visitors a memorable experience beyond traditional beach tourism. www.arbektravel.com , Atilla Arman
